Whether it’s on the track or the open roads, as long as speed and curves are involved, any car will be prone to one or the other. Oversteer and Understeer are very recurrent terms you will always hear when talking about car handling. We all know what oversteer looks like, right? This issue doesn’t just apply to iRacing by the way = it’s a pure motorsport problem which has been around since we first started racing. So, what are the limiting factors to a good lap pace? A good place to start is by understanding oversteer and understeer. That’s professional racing car driving, in a nutshell! As a director your job is to identify the “limiting factor” (the thing making you slower) and report that in a way that the engineering team can make a setup change. Namely, make us go faster! The difference between a professional and an amateur racing driver is, most often, that the professional is very good at giving feedback to his/her engineers. It’s the car (in the real world) where I learned how to give feedback to my engineer to help him make setup changes that would reduce a particular limiting factor in the entry, mid and exit phases of a corner. One of the classic cars available on this platform (and one of my all-time favourites) is the Mazda MX5 – renowned for its balance, accessibility, and prolific racing heritage. IRacing provides an exceptionally realistic racing experience that demands a combination of strategic car setup, smart racecraft, and precision driving to be close to the pace.
